One of our customers French Girls was focused on increasing the number of people that went from downloading the app to becoming an active user. “For us, activation is directly correlated to retention,” says, Jeff Farkas, a developer and backend architect on the team. “Without activation, retention is poor.” Through testing, they found a new onboarding experience that doubled retention to 50%. There's typically 2 goals that you want to achieve from a good onboarding experience:
- Encourage activation or registration
Educate your user on how to use your app
Every app is different, but there are still some good rules of thumb to follow for creating a great onboarding, including:
- Keep it short and sweet (make sure the onboarding is no more than 3 screens, shorter is better!)
Give the user an option to skip the onboarding if they want to jump right into the app
Make it easy to sign up
Where do you find users are dropping off in your onboarding? What tests would you run to increase the number of people that go from downloading your app to becoming an active user?
Here's some ideas we thought of.
