Faces of Optiverse: Chris Gosling

Here's a chance to get to know Chris Gosling a little better. Learn how he got involved with CRO, what inspres him, and more. Plus, he is an incredibly interesting person. In this discussion, he tells 2 truths and a lie -- I bet you can't guess correctly!

Name Chris Gosling @chrisgosling
Title Content Optimization Specialist , Complex Media

How did you end up working in conversion rate optimization? Did you mean to?
I went to school for advertising design in a program that was mostly dedicated to print design. While in school I began getting into web design and picking up internships to learn more about designing for digital mediums.  From then on I worked in various designer / front-end developer roles. While working I began gaining more of an interest in UX Design and learning about how to better interact with users. Complex Media was looking for someone to lead an A/B testing initiative that they were starting and wanted someone who could bring a design and development background to the position. I jumped at the opportunity and began to learn about A/B testing. As a designer first I was (and still am) excited about this type of work because it allows me to gather data about design decisions. Previously in my career all of my decisions were made by what I, or a client, thought was the best option. Now, I am often surprised to find that a design decision that makes sense to me doesn’t have the impact on a user that I expected. I now have the opportunity to learn from these decisions and make better decisions as I move forward.

What’s been the most inspiring moment in your website optimization career so far?
When I hear stories about small changes that result in massive increase in user interaction it gets me amped to find that golden change. I haven’t found it yet but I can feel it getting closer. It’s also inspiring to work with so many experts in different fields here at Complex who bring so many different ideas to the table. Everyone is dedicated to putting out the best product we can.

What project are you working on right now that you are excited about?
We just launched a new version of complex.com and It’s exciting to help mold this project into the best experience possible. Check it out and let me know what you think!  We are also planning on rebuilding one of our other properties from scratch and I’m excited to run tests during the early stages and help craft a final product.

2 truths and lie. CAN YOU GUESS WHICH IS THE LIE?!?

  1. I'm related to celebrity heart throb Ryan Gosling.
  2. While pursuing an acting career I had a minor role in a movie called Bad Girl Island which received terrible reviews.
  3. Long before getting into website optimization I worked a job that required cleaning piranha, shark, snapping turtle, and barracuda tanks.

Interesting Bio and evolution of career.

I'm going to take the most likely guess - Chris is not related to Ryan Gosling

I'm with Keith on this one. The others are just so specific that they seem more likely... unless that's the trick!

@chrisgosling - I don't think you ever cleaned Barracuda cages.

I'm trying with no. 2 as a lie.

Number 1 seems too obvious and number 3 is so crazy that it could as well be true Smiley Happy

This revelation opens up SO many more questions! How are you related to Ryan Gosling!?! How did you find yourself cleaing the cages of extremely dangerous creatures? I take it that the barracudas/sharks were not present while you were cleaning (at least I hope not)?

Thanks for doing this, Chris. It's great to get to know you a bit better.
