[Announcement] Starting October 15th, 2014, we will no longer support Internet Explorer 6 & 7

Starting October 15th, 2014, the Optimizely JavaScript snippet will no longer support Internet Explorer 6 and 7.  Specifically, experiments will not activate and no event tracking calls will be made on IE 6 & 7.  This means that your visitors using these browsers will be excluded from Optimizely experiments. Ultimately, this will make it easier for our customers to design and run experiments across the remaining supported browsers.

We decided to deprecate support for IE 6 & 7 for several reasons. First, many of our customers’ sites and experiments encounter difficulty supporting these two browsers. In fact, we noticed a large number of Audiences created that exclude these browsers specifically. Second, a very small percentage (~0.2%) of the traffic shown Optimizely experiments use IE 6 or 7. Moreover, maintaining support for these browsers in our code base is difficult, preventing Optimizely from improving our JavaScript snippet performance on remaining browsers.

  1. What about visitors to my experiments currently running on these browsers?

    1. It will appear as if the experiment has stopped and no Optimizely experiments are running on the page.

  1. What about my data?

    1. Our data indicate that IE 6 & 7 form a negligible fraction (~0.2%) of traffic to almost all of our customers’ sites.

    2. You may see a change in results in the unlikely scenario that you have an unusually high percentage of traffic from these two browsers AND an experiment running for which a variation performs differently only on these two browsers. In this scenario, using browser targeting in Audiences to exclude IE 6 and 7 for any experiments that will be active on October 15 will avoid any discrepancy.
