Two completely different versions of a site. Recommendations?

 Hi all,

I'm building a new site to replace a very old one. The old one works quite well and the site ranks high but it's time to upgrade.

Would you recommend A/B testing the old version vs a brand new version on a different URL/subdomain/folder?

We'd really like to see if people are happy with the new version and then decide what to do.

Would this method throw up any issues or even useful results?

You can, but I'd recommend using JavaScript to manipulate your old site. If you followed such an approach, you could easily test things and manipulate more things as you progressed along a testing roadmap. Directly testing against a different URL would lead you to likely desire more changes in the future but not as much flexibility as having used JavaScript for manipulation.

Re: Two completely different versions of a site. Recommendations?

This question is exactly what I was looking for, but the OP has a slightly diff goal in mind. With our new site, I wanted to know whether A/B was useful for testing new site with html5 canvas video vs new site with hero + other features.

Does A/B make sense when the two versions are drastically different?

Should I post this as a new question?

Many thanks optimizers,
Jose
