Segments created via a {custom} Dimension or Audience?

I'm a bit confused here about segments,,

What is the difference between setting up a segment created via a custom dimension and a segment created using an Audience?

Hey there @hbaecklund, happy to help!

The summary: Basically, Audiences are a collection of visitor characteristics that you've built using "true/false" statements in Optimizely and Dimensions are a way of classifying visitors into categories using Optimizely's JavaScript API, so you can segment them by any value that they contain.

Now, the longer version...

Audiences ask binary questions: did they come from this referral source or not? Did they use this query parameter or not? Do they have this cookie ot not? They always evaluate to true or false. When you use an Audience as a segment on the Results page, you're effectively asking "How did people who met these conditions convert?" If you have multiple Audiences in an experiment, then you could segment your results to see how each Audience converted.

Meanwhile, custom dimensions allow you to add visitors through the API and classify them based on more than just "true" and "false." So you could set a dimension for "plan type" with values such as "basic," "plus," and "premium." Or you could set a dimension for "favorite food" with values such as "pizza," "hamburger," and "sushi." When you use a Dimension as a segment, on the results page, you're effectively asking "How did people in each of these categories convert?" So you could see how the pizza group converted differently from hamburger and from sushi.

As you might be able to tell, there's some overlap between how Audiences and Dimensions function. We give you that flexibility so you can come up with more customized segmentation that meets your needs. Are there specific Audiences/Dimensions that you're looking to segment? I'm sure we could help get more specific!

Thanks,

Adam
